Payment Flows

Nine steps. The customer does one.

From the cart to the receipt.

4Square Systems is the merchant of record for every customer transaction. What the customer purchases is a one‑time digital redemption code, delivered electronically and applied to their cart at the participating merchant’s checkout.

From here, it’s fully automated. Steps 05–09 need no manual reconciliation. Our proprietary orchestration and automation engine handles the rest, with every step recorded in our secure database.

Order paid, stock adjusted.

No merchant payout happens here. The customer’s card transaction is their purchase of a digital good from 4Square Systems. Settlement of merchant agreements is conducted separately and downstream, under agreements independent of the customer card transaction.
07

Fulfilment

The paid order enters the participating merchant’s own fulfilment queue. Shipping and inventory remain the merchant’s responsibility.

For reviewers

Where the card rail fits.

Card acceptance sits inside this same flow, with the controls described in full on our Security & Compliance page:

  • SAQ‑A scope. Card capture is performed by an external PCI‑DSS Level 1 service. 4Square Systems receives an opaque token, never the card number.
  • Verified intent. Every purchase is confirmed by the cardholder through an out‑of‑band link to a verified email address or mobile number before settlement.
  • AVS, CVV and 3‑D Secure 2 checks are performed on authorization where supported by the issuer.
  • Geographic enforcement. Billing and shipping addresses are checked against the approved scope, the United States and Canada, before any card authorization is attempted.
  • Velocity and anomaly controls operate at the customer, IP and gateway level, with automatic throttling on patterns inconsistent with normal commerce.
  • No merchant funding at transaction time. The card transaction is the cardholder’s purchase of a digital good from 4Square Systems. No portion of it is paid onward to the participating merchant at the point of sale.
  • Merchant settlement is separate. Commercial arrangements with participating merchants are governed by their own agreements and settled downstream, independently of the customer card transaction.

Bank and crypto rails are separate purchase paths and do not involve a card authorization.
